About the Mongolian Archaeological Dig and Itinerary

Uncover the mysteries of Mongolia’s ancient civilizations on an exclusive archaeological dig and tour, guided by renowned Mongolian archaeologist Dr. Iderkhangai Tumur-Ochir.

The dig site is located in the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Orkhon Valley, which has yielded groundbreaking discoveries since 2018. Here, burials from three distinct historical periods—the Late Bronze Age (Slab Grave Culture), the Xiongnu Empire, and the Xianbei period have been found all interwoven within the same burial ground. You will be a part of the team to explore the deep cultural connections and genealogical ties between these civilizations.

How you will make an impact on this archaeology dig

This expedition offers an unparalleled chance to delve into the rich histories of the Xiongnu, Xianbei, and their predecessors while actively contributing to groundbreaking research. You’ll be working in collaboration with the National University of Mongolia, Department of Anthropology and Archeology. As a part of an effort to support international and Mongolian research and conservation efforts, your fees may be used to subsidize the trip cost for one or two students or scholars in joining this expedition.

About the Mongolian Archaeological Quest

ulaanbaatar-2360887_1920.jpg

Delve into a 2,000-year history of Mongolia, with Dr. Iderkhangai Tumur-Ochir on a thrilling journey of discovery and insight.

This expedition takes place at a newly discovered archaeological site that is rewriting our understanding of the intricately layered burial practices of three ancient civilizations spanning from the late Bronze Age, to the Xiongnu or Hunnu Empire and the Xianbei people.

The Orkhon Valley itself is in central Mongolia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its exceptional archaeological record spanning over two millennia of nomadic civilizations, including the Huns, Göktürks, Uighurs, and Mongols.

Home to major historical centers such as the ancient Mongol capital Karakorum and the Erdene Zuu Monastery, the valley preserves remarkable monuments like the Orkhon inscriptions, deer stones, burial mounds, and religious complexes that illustrate the political, spiritual, and cultural development of steppe empires.

As a crossroads between East and West, the Orkhon Valley is a living landscape that continues to support traditional nomadic pastoralism today, making the valley not only an archive of ancient history but also a rare example of enduring cultural continuity.

We like to say that the best part of traveling in Mongolia is spontaneous events and interactions, which lead to unexpected interactions, discoveries, and experiences that will make your trip unique and memorable. At Mongolia Quest, we ensure the integrity of your overall itinerary but at the same time, will go out of our way to make necessary changes in order to enrich your travel experience with us.
