Have you ever wondered if it was possible to join an archaeology dig or if there are archaeology digs near you?
You can step into the shoes of an archaeologist and become part of a real citizen science adventure, even if you’ve never gone on an archaeology dig and have no prior experience. Whether you want to dig at archaeological sites in Europe, South America, the US or beyond (or whichever is closer to home) there are opportunities for you to literally dig into the past.
Where to Find Archaeology Digs Near You
Finding out where there are digs to join is a little like hunting for treasure. You can start by searching the internet or AI using keywords like “fieldwork” along with the country or location, but that's slow-going and cumbersome.
If that sounds like too much work, there are a few reputable resources to find archaeology digs to join.

Ancient Odysseys: Ancient Odysseys is a resource designed for members of the public and citizen scientists* who want to join research-based archaeology dig vacations at locations around the world. Ancient Odysseys collaborates with the scientists to create small group dig vacations that include archaeological excavations, lab work and conservation practices at real archaeological dig sites. There is no experience needed, and accommodations and most meals are included in the cost.
*What is a citizen scientist? According to National Geographic, citizen science is the practice of public participation and collaboration in scientific research to increase scientific knowledge. Through citizen science, people share and contribute to data monitoring and collection programs.
Archaeological Institute of America (AIA): Although built as a resource for professional archaeologists and archaeology students, the AIA lists archaeological fieldwork that’s searchable by map. You can hunt through their catalog to search for sites you’re interested in and then inquire with each project director individually. The AIA also offers tours led by archaeologists, but the tours do not include the chance to join an excavation.
Earthwatch: This non-profit organization connects volunteers with scientists for hands-on citizen science experiences. Earthwatch’s scientific expeditions mainly focus on ocean, wildlife and climate change, but from time-to-time, you can find archaeology digs that accept paid volunteers.
Dig Ventures is an organization that has pioneered crowdfunded archaeology digs. They run digs throughout the UK to join or contribute toward and even offer online classes and digs for kids. Check out their digs on their Our Projects page.
Council for British Archaeology (CBA):The CBA promotes volunteer opportunities related to archaeological sites across Britain. It's not an official listing, but you can find digs, classes and lectures. Check their event calendar for onsite and virtual events.
